It seemed to me that you did your best, but Vinnakota’s answers were disappointingly vague at best. I think your Identity Trap book is hugely relevant to the problems he’s facing and he does not understand the larger picture that you lay out in that book.

Perhaps you’d feel uncomfortable bringing up your ideas. But I think it would have been more interesting to push him toward exploring the roots of the problem.

Those who don’t understand the problem rarely know how to solve it.

I actually listen (read) these more because I want to hear your ideas, and I think I might not be alone in that, given we are all subscribers to your podcast.

A mandatory orientation course for all new students to explain the rules of proper behavior and why they help promote a positive learning environment, would be good.

The desire for open exchange of ideas that supports the principles of our constitutional democratic republic must come from below, the students and faculty. College and university presidents and administrators cannot force this on campus communities no matter how well intentioned and funded. Nevertheless, presidents and administrators are still responsible to uphold the policies and laws of their campuses, but they can also foster an environment in which students, faculty and staff work towards an environment of constructive discourse.
